“Whatever you do, don’t talk about social issues!” a media consultant told a group of radio hosts and staff at a Christian broadcaster’s workshop attended by some of AFR’s staff a few months ago.
Sometimes you just have to break the “rules.” On this one, American Family Radio networks absolutely must. We understand that our faith and biblical worldview cannot be separated from social, cultural, or political elements of our society.
But others take such advice to heart.
Unplanned, the movie about former Planned Parenthood director Abby Johnson’s dramatic turn-around after observing an ultrasound-guided abortion, is now in theaters. See AFA’s review here.
Late last week Johnson posted on Facebook about a disappointing decision made by Christian radio network K-LOVE concerning promotion of the film on their expansive network:
March 22, 2019 – Ever heard of the Christian radio station K-LOVE? Of course you have. They are huge, in just about every market. And, they are funded by their listeners.
Well, here’s some news for you. K-LOVE has decided that they will not run any promos for my movie, Unplanned. So, a Christian radio network won’t advertise for a prolife movie. They have stated that they don’t want to promote anything “political.”

And YES, they have often supported Christian films in the past.
Later the same day, Johnson posted an update with a bit of a shift in the story:
March 22, 2019 – Update on K-LOVE Radio debacle. They are now saying that they don’t promote R rated films...which is total bull because they promoted The Passion of the Christ, which was also rated R.
They can’t seem to keep track of what they stand for.
Oh, and I just found out they support the abortion loving Susan G Komen. So, there you go.
We can only guess how many of Johnson’s 214,462 followers took action. But something happened. And Johnson took note. The following day she posted about K-LOVE’s change in position:
March 23, 2019 – I have a wonderful update!! After meeting again today with one of the Unplanned producers, K-LOVE Radio has decided to stand up for the unborn and promote Unplanned!! We knew they were prolife, so their decision only confirms that they do indeed have a heart for the unborn. We are thrilled!
Thank you to everyone who sent emails encouraging them to promote the film. Your voices were heard. We are strong together and I’m honored to have K-LOVE on the team!

The Christian faith is centered on the truth. It’s what we want.
During July and August of 2015, research was conducted by the American Culture & Faith Institute that proved this point. The national survey revealed that 65% of spiritually active Christians were unsatisfied with the level of biblical teaching on social and political issues of the day.
Though Christian moderates were less likely than Christian conservatives to desire more information, overall, only 1% said they wanted less teaching on current social and political issues.
It’s time to recognize that God’s Word applies to every aspect of life. We cannot compartmentalize Him. There is nothing “moderate” about following Jesus. If babies are being put to death, we must show and tell the truth. It is an impossible feat in the conscience of a Christian to be silent about this injustice.
